You cannot call God Father if you don’t call the church your mother. -Augustine
Every now and again, there is something from the Sunday sermon manuscript that does not actually make it into the actual Sunday morning sermon. This might be for any number of reasons. Also, there are times that something is in the manuscript, makes it into the sermon, and i just miss it anyway. i’m not sure which is the case about the following quote from Pastor Josh’s manuscript, but either way it is a good one and i thought you all should have the chance to encounter it (for the first or maybe the second time):
It’s very common today for people to beat up the church. The church is an easy target. It’s full of sinners, full of flaws, not perfect. But it’s God’s. He knew what it would be like when he decided to start it. And warts and all, it’s his bride and it’s his primary instrument for good and display of his glory in the world. And just because it’s under construction and paint is still wet, many decide to bail. That’s not only unbiblical, but it breaks my heart. Because for a believer to leave, “the church” is to leave the Cornerstone, to leave the apostles and prophets, to leave the Father, to dismember oneself and to run down Jesus’ wife. Augustine said, You cannot call God Father if you don’t call the church your mother.
