We are currently in the early weeks of a sermon series titled, Known: Gospel Identity. Together. We will be going deep into God’s Word and getting to the heart of what it means and what it looks like to selflessly live out authentic gospel-saturated community for the glory of God and the fame of Christ. This quote from Brad House (one of the pastors at Mars Hill) is fantastic as it speaks to the proper foundation and purpose for gospel community groups. Enjoy.
We do not have [gospel communities] to close the back door of the church. We do not have [gospel communities] because people need to belong or we need to care for one another. These are good but secondary effects of authentic community. These effect are not the foundation. We have [gospel communities] because we have seen the glory of God and we have been given the grace to live our lives to exalt the Christ. We have [gospel communities] because we have been reconciled to God and one another. We once were not a people but now we are a people of God’s own possession (1st Peter 2:9-10). We have [gospel communities] as a proclamation of the goodness of our God and testimony to the completed work of the cross. This is the foundation for gospel-saturated community that will overflow with life.
