Towards the end of yesterday’s sermon, Pastor Josh quoted C.S. Lewis concerning the radical claims of Christ. It’s a lengthy quote and a very powerful defense against the claim that Jesus was nothing more than merely a great moralistic teacher. The quote comes from the book Mere Christianity, by C.S. Lewis of course. Buy the book on amazon (or anywhere for that matter). It is a fantastic read. Here is the quote from yesterday’s sermon:
You can shut Jesus up as a fool. You can spit at him. You can kill him as a demon. Or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend it. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things that Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would be a lunatic on the level with the man who says he’s a poached egg or he would be the devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either he is the Son of God or a mad man or something worse.
