Josh has served us all well with his sermon this past week on God’s Glory. If you missed it, download the podcast and give it a listen; it’s absolutely foundational to our understanding of Who God is and why He created us.
For those wanting to study deeper about God’s desire that He be glorified above all else, I’d like to recommend the book by Jonathan Edwards, The End for Which God Created the World. Perhaps the best way to do this is to buy John Piper’s book, God’s Passion for His Glory.
This book contains an in-depth introduction to this topic, as well as to Edwards’ book, by John Piper. The remainder (and majority) or the rest of the full text of Edwards’ book. Especially helpful is the treatment He provides of Scriptural proof of this doctrine; after reading page after page of nothing but Scriptural proof, it’s hard to leave this book unconvinced; God really does desire that He be glorified above all else on earth, by all He has created. He does so both for His praise and for our joy. And He is not selfish to do so, but loving, for if He demanded our affections go fully toward anything less than Himself, He is robbing us of the greatest joy in the universe.
