If you’ve been at Crew very long, you know that we are passionate about Huntington. Most people just sit around and complain about what needs fixed and they never roll up their sleeves and do anything about it (and yes, many people at Crew are guilty of this). The Crew City Team has been actively involved in an organization called Create Huntington. Every Thursday at the Frederick Building lobby, people get together to brainstorm and bounce ideas of how we can improve Huntington and make our city shine. Then, every few months, we meet as a big group to discuss our progress and be inspired by greats like Vaughn Grisham (an expert on community development). Last night (Monday, May 18) there was a summit to discuss what has happened and what needs to happen for several key areas of Huntington’s growth. Vaughn Grisham has visited Huntington several times and has made many suggestions and inspire us on how we can become a creative community and utilize our already amazing infrastructure, passion, and landscape, etc. There are many boulders to overcome, however, like the poor attitude and image our citizens have or the fact that people will talk about what needs done, but never do it. There is a full report of Huntington resident survey results that is available for you to read – if you are interested in seeing it, see Tim or Christina Bailey, Sean Knisely, Jen Brooks, or myself (Kim Adkins). You can join us on Thursdays, or go to the virtual “Chat N’ Chew” and post/comment on ideas.
Jen and I utiltized our new-found-love of Twitter to post some of our thoughts at the Summit, and the comments that Vaughn had to say about getting Huntington back to its Jewel City glory:
Brooksjen: At the create huntington summit to hear about the plans that will lead to a better Huntington. I’m so geeked about it!!! 🙂
Brooksjen: “we need to start loving ourselves and Huntington.”
JDPCrew: @Brooksjen I know where you’re coming from but we need to start loving Jesus and huntington
JDPCrew: @Brooksjen keepthe updates coming
Brooksjen: @JDPCrew the leader said it. Everyone always says love h-ton. I was just impressed that he connected loving your city w/loving yourself
Brooksjen: Did i just become the leader of this group? Holy crap!
Kimikimkim: If we are gonna get things done, we’re gonna have to roll up our sleeves and do it!
Brooksjen “You (H-ton) have a real opportunity to lead the state of WV… And be the jewel of the entire state.”
Brooksjen: Knowledge economy does not equal just college degrees but also job training
Kimikimkim: vaughn grisham just said that training is the key to job growth ..wait, that’s my field…and still it took me a year to find a job here 😕
Brooksjen: Even community development is a MU v. WVU game 😛
Kimikimkim: count it – – -huntington SHOULD be the no. 1 city in wv.. who’s with me to jump on board to get it there?
Brooksjen: Don’t enroll just students in ur schools. Enroll families. W/o families on board, the kids are half educated.
Kimikimkim: @JDPCrew you wouldnt be interested in teaching a series of parenting workshops would ya? it would make huntington sooo much better!
(later that eve) JDPCrew: @kimikimkim I have and plan on doing it several times at crew
Brooksjen: It is biologically impossible for a school to conceive and bear a child.
Kimikimkim: @Brooksjen i almost said amen when vaughn said that schools arent designed to be a fix-it
Brooksjen: @kimikimkim i’ve got an amen-er at my table
Kimikimkim: let’s make huntington soo amazing that people never wanna leave..and they start telling their friends to come back.
Kimikimkim: @Brooksjen @Wilburbythesea let’s team up and win the powerball..pay off our debts, buy crew a building, then put the rest toward downtown. :p
Kimikimkim: “no one is gonna come and rescue htn – nobody gives a [*expletive*] about huntington – EXCEPT huntington’s people” ..so let’s get with the program!
Brooksjen: No one’s going to save Huntington. No one gives a [*expletive*] about h-ton except those who are here or have been here. Charleston and D.C won’t save us
Kimikimkim: i wanna live in a silo! way to go creative towns!…what have you done for your city today?
Brooksjen: Know and tell your stories.
Kimikimkim: Vaughn Grisham – “get off your butts! stop cheering we are marshall and start cheering we are huntington”
(non-twitter convo) Tim Bailey: You should have seen the dirty looks that woman was giving you when you pulled out your phone. Kim: Heaven forbid I take notes, even if they are on Twitter :p
Another blogworthy Tim Bailey quote: “Imitation Crab – the hotdog of seafood.”
Wilburbythesea: Very inspired and optimistic after the Create Huntington summit
Kimikimkim: always a good eve when the @crewcommunity city team gets together with the rest of huntingtonites that wanna make a difference.
******************* The following is not a Crew view, it is the opinion of the City Team who puts in many long hard hours to provide the people of Crew opportunities to serve our city. It saddens and frustrates us that we put so much time and energy into organizing projects, and still people would rather sleep in or do something for themselves rather than sacrifice a few hours on a Saturday morn to be a good example of Crew and Christ. *******************
OK Crew, I’m bout to get down and dirty, and pretty real with you. We as Crew stink at community outreach. Yep, I said it. We say we are city missional, but every time we have an event to do something for the betterment of Huntington, it is the same 6-12 people. How sad is that? How does that look to our community? We push 150+ on a good Sunday, and only 8 people can regularly show our city Christ’s love? That is downright depressing, frustrating, and appalling. Get off your lazy butts and do something for our city.
