My fourth grade teacher Mrs. Terry introduced me to this wonderful term to describe an type of event that we have all experienced: the I Spy. Now, I know this is a title for a popular child/travelling game, but it is also a way to describe our perceptions of God working in our lives.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been praying about something or deep in thought, or just pondering about something, and all of the sudden I see that exact thing come up in my life-be it through a conversation, on the news, in a book, whatever….How many times have you said, “I was just watching/listening/reading/talking about that!”
Okay, I know I’m not really explaining this so well, so here’s an example. In my small group, one of the guys was talking about how he was praying and meditating on this verse in the Bible during a kind of financial rough spot. Well, a few days later he receives an anonymous envelope containing money and that exact verse!!! Can you believe that.
But, an I Spy doesn’t have to be that specific. Here’s my example (and the real reason I’m writing this post today): we’ve been going through this generosity series at Crew for a few weeks and we’re all doing things to try to be more generous…but do we see it in the outside world?
My friend Nick sent me a message today saying he and a friend have quit their jobs, are selling all that they own and doing full-time homeless missions in a big conversion van that runs on veggie oil! Now, he doesn’t know that we’ve been talking about generosity at church, and we haven’t crossed paths in a few months, but for some reason he sends me this message letting me know that he’s doing this huge, generous thing in the name of God!
I Spy! I spy God actively working in my life and in the lives of other to accomplish His purpose. I spy is the best possible term to replace coincidence.
So, what’s the big deal? TELL PEOPLE ABOUT YOUR I SPY’S. Tell everyone you know about how you can actively see God working in your live and in the lives of the people you care about. This is amazing to me!
Tangent: the fathers of this great nation, men we consider to be God-fearing individuals, were mostly deists. They believed in a God who has been deemed the divine watchmaker. They believed that God set the world in motion (wound the clock) and then just let it go (watched it tick). NO NO NO! How far from the truth is this!!!
Blog about your I Spy’s, encourage others about them and let’s all get excited together!
Here’s what I’m doing. Nick is coming on my radio show tomorrow night (11 p.m. so sorry to you early sleepers) and he’s going to talk about what he’s doing and why he’s doing it.
Listen to the show if you want. 88.1 WMUL-FM 11:00 p.m.
I want to get behind him in this and support him with prayer. Whoever wants to join me in agreeing to pray for Nick at least once a week, just reply on here and I’ll give him a list of sigs saying, we want to pray for you. I know that would be huge for him.
Get on here, post your responses, listen to the show, get excited about God working in your life and the lives of others, and SHARE YOUR I SPY’S!!!!!!
